Free Smoke Detectors

From the Desk of Fire Chief Herb Slack

A memo to the Borough Administration

Bristol Fire Company at Wood and Market St has utilized some of their Federal grant funds to purchase smoke detectors. These detectors have a ten year battery so that battery replacement is not required. The idea is that when it is time to replace the battery, it is time to replace the smoke detector. The fire company is going door to door conducting a fire safety survey. Based on the information from the survey the fire company will install additional smoke detectors for free for residents that are evaluated at being at a higher risk.

The specific targets for the smoke detector installation are people with disabilities especially where that disability may affect their ability to escape from a fire, senior citizens 65 and older and in homes where there are children under 10.

There are a limited number of detectors; any council person who believes that they have people in there areas should contact me. The fire company will go out and conduct the survey and install additional smoke detectors as required. This may be one to seven additional smoke detectors depending on the determined level of risk.

We will also conduct follow-up visits to the residents in approximately six months.
